Box Elder lady Bears go back to back

The Box Elder girls basketball team faced Roy Winifred Saturday night for the class “C” state championship at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls . The Lady Bears built an early lead then hung on for a 48-42 win. Lilly Gopher led Box Elder with 15 points while Jennel Momberg added 13, with Kyla Momberg coming off the bench to put up 8 points  and 8 rebounds. This gives Box Elder back to back class “C” state championships as they finished the season with a 24 and 2 record.

Skylights Fall to Arizona Christian Friday Afternoon

The MSU-Northern Skylight basketball team has been in Great Falls at the University of Providence for a pair of non-conference games. Friday afternoon Northern took the court opposite Arizona Christian. Arizona Christian would get a win of 75-63 over the Skylights. Leading the way for Northern in scoring was Sydney Hovde and Sam Caruth who each had 17 in the contest. Saturday the Skylights meet Westmont College start time at 5:30 pm, stay tuned to New Media Broadcasters Sports for updates and results.

Rose Obunaga Resigns

MSU-Northern athletic direct Christian Oberqwell informed New Media Broadcasters Tuesday afternoon that Northern Head volleyball coach Rose Obunaga had handed in her resignation.  Obunaga who played for the Kenyan National Team in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics took over the Skylight program in 2016.  In speaking with New Media Broadcasters coach Obunaga said it was factors beyond wins and losses that lead to her to moving on.  It’s a matter of being closer to her family and she enjoyed her time at Northern and this year’s team was specially great to work with.  Athletic direct Oberqwell said a search for a new volleyball coach at MSU-Northern would begin immediately.

Carroll College football coach Van Diest retires after 20 seasons

Carroll College football coach Mike Van Diest announced his retirement Monday after 20 seasons and six NAIA national championships at the Helena School.

Van Diest led his teams to a 203-54 record and won four straight national titles from 2002-2005.  The Fighting Saints also won titles in 2007 and 2010.  Van Diest’s Saints won 14 Frontier Conference titles, he was named the league’s coach of the year 10 times and hes was recently named to the NAIA Football Hall of Fame.

However, the Saints didn’t have a winning season in the last four, posting a 17-24 mark from 2015-2018.

Carroll President John Cech says that while Van Diest is a coaching legend he has also been an integral part of his players’ lives.  Cech says Van Diest and his wife, Heidi, plan their summer weekends around the weddings of former players.

Skylight Basketball Exhibition Game with Minot State

The MSU-Northern Skylights had an exhibition game with Division II Minot State Sunday night from the Armory Gymnasium. The Skylights had a first half lead of 26-24 but Minot State rallied back in the second half for a win of 55-45 over Northern. Next up for the Skylight basketball team is a pair of games at the University of Providence Friday they take the court against Arizona Christian and Saturday Westmont College, start time at 5:30pm.

Light Basketball at L/C State

The MSU-Northern Men’s basketball team has been at L/C State in Lewiston Idaho over the weekend with two non conference games to play. Friday afternoon had the Lights take the court against New Hope Christian, Northern would get a win of 122-55. The Lights were led by Kavon Bey who accounted for 27 points and 7 boards on the outing. The Lights took the court opposite College of Idaho Saturday, the Wolves would get a 78-58 win over the Lights. In the contest Northern was led by Adam Huse who was 2 of 5 from beyond the arch for 12 points. Next up for the Light Basketball team is a game in Pablo, Montana with Salish Kootenai College next Saturday.
